Flip-Flop Slam: a card, a face-down card and a flip-flop on notebook paper

Ddakji (딱지, played as ddakji-chigi, 딱지치기) is a Korean children's game: one player's folded-paper tile lies on the ground, and the other slams theirs down to flip it over. Flip it and you win it. The game goes back generations in Korea, and it became known worldwide after it appeared in the opening scene of a hit Korean survival drama.

How ddakji is played

  1. Rock-paper-scissors decides who goes first; the other player puts a ddakji on the ground.
  2. On your turn, slam your ddakji down hard on or right beside theirs.
  3. If their ddakji flips over, you win it.
  4. If not, the turn passes, and now your ddakji is the one on the ground.

The force matters, but so does the angle: the air pushed under the tile is what turns it over.

The same game, all over the world

Children play close cousins of ddakji in many countries: menko in Japan, bater bafo with stickers in Brazil, and đập hình in Vietnam, where kids slam a flip-flop on the desk so its gust flips picture cards. Flip-Flop Slam grew out of that Vietnamese version.

Ddakji online with friends

Flip-Flop Slam is a free online card-flipping game in the spirit of ddakji, playable in any phone or computer browser. Make a room, send the link, and 2 to 4 friends join. The physics behaves like the real thing: slam close for a stronger gust, tilt the slipper to make the card skim low and flip, and watch the wind. Knock a card off the table and you are out of the round. When nobody else is online, computer players join in. The game is in 10 languages, Korean included.
